Iranian Ambassador: We look forward to a pivotal role for Iraq in the region

President Barham Saleh discussed at the Peace Palace in Baghdad on Sunday evening with Iranian Ambassador Erj Musjedi and his country’s consul in Iraq the bilateral relations between the two countries.

“At the outset of the meeting, Ambassador Masjadi conveyed congratulations to President Barham Saleh and congratulated him on the performance of his duties,” a presidential statement said.

The president praised “the bilateral relations between Iraq and Iran and its role in supporting stability and peace in the region, especially the role of the Islamic Republic in supporting Iraq in its fight against terrorism and defeating the terrorist advocate.” He also reviewed the historical relations between the two neighboring countries, Stressing “the importance of advancing them to the highest levels to serve the interests of the peoples of the two neighboring countries.”

“The current tension in the region is unacceptable and we look forward to a deep dialogue on sensitive issues in the next phase,” the statement quoted Saleh as saying.

He stressed that “there is a historic opportunity to succeed and overcome difficulties, and we will work to be Iraq in the next phase to the point of regional and international consensus starting work to reduce tensions and establish security and stability and create an opportunity for a safe environment for reconstruction and prosperity.”

“I wish you and Prime Minister-designate Adel Abdul-Mahdi all the good luck and I assure you that you have the confidence of your people and I invite you to ensure the interests of our two countries. Iraq is strong in its resources, personalities and efficiency, and needs strong management of these resources,” he said.
