And a Washington Post report earlier, Tuesday, quoted people familiar with the matter as saying that Biden had decided to withdraw troops by September:
The newspaper said that the decision, which Biden is expected to announce, on Wednesday, will keep thousands of American soldiers in Afghanistan, after the date of May 1 that was agreed upon between the administration of former President Donald Trump and the Taliban.
Biden previously announced that the United States does not intend to stay for a “long period” in Afghanistan, but he pointed to the “difficulty” of adhering to the May 1 deadline for the withdrawal of US forces.
In February 2020, under the administration of Donald Trump, the United States concluded a historic agreement with the Taliban, providing for the withdrawal of all American soldiers from Afghanistan by May 1 in exchange for security guarantees and the start of direct negotiations between the militants and the authorities in Kabul.
Only 2,500 American soldiers remain in Afghanistan, where Washington began its intervention after the attacks of September 11, 2001.
