Barzani arrives in Vatican and meets with Pope and Prime Minister
The head of the Kurdistan Regional Government, Nigervan Barzani, arrived in the Vatican on Friday and held a meeting with Pope Benedict XVI and Vatican Prime Minister Cardinal Pietro Barrolen.
The media close to the Kurdistan Democratic Party, in reports reported today, and the tarnished Alsumaria News, said that the President of the Kurdistan Regional Government, Najirvan Barzani, met with Pope Benedict XVI, indicating that the two sides discussed the situation in the Kurdistan region and the situation of Christians in Iraq and the region.
Barzani met with Vatican Prime Minister Cardinal Pietro Barrolin, Barzani said, adding that Barzani would hold a meeting with the Vatican Foreign Minister during his visit to Rome.
Barzani’s visit to Rome comes at a time when the Kurdistan region is suffering from an internal political and economic crisis following the holding of the independence referendum on September 25, while the relationship between the federal government and the Kurdistan region is very tense after the last referendum on the separation on the twenty-fifth of last September, The central government Haider Abadi to impose several measures, including stopping international flights in Erbil and Sulaymaniyah airports, and demanding the region to hand over all land border crossings.
