PM Barzani Supports Coexistence and Religious Harmony

ERBIL — Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani has reiterated his government’s support for coexistence and religious harmony in the autonomous region, his office said in a statement.

The Kurdish prime minister on Saturday received Mar Awa Royel, Patriarch of the Assyrian Church of the East, discussing the latest developments pertaining the religious affairs among different components in the autonomous region.

“PM Barzani congratulated him, expressing KRG’s support in promoting coexistence and religious harmony,” reads the statement by the premier’s office.

“The Patriarch thanked the Premier, commending his commitment to tolerance. He agreed all regions should promote peace and love whilst the situation for Iraqi and Syrian Christians was also discussed.”

Mar Awa Royel was elected 122nd Patriarch at Erbil’s St. John the Baptist Church on September 8, replacing Mar Gewargis III Sliwa, who stepped down for health reasons.

His holiness was inaugurated on September 13, in Erbil’s Ainkawa town.

PM Barzani in late September welcomed a delegation of bishops from the Kurdistan Region and Ninevah plain, reiterating his support for the freedom of religion and coexistence.

“Prime Minister Barzani reiterated his support for promoting forgiveness, coexistence, religious freedom, and human rights in the Kurdistan Region,” the premier’s office said in a press release at the time.
