Barzani: Kurds Willing to Achieve Their Rights Through Peace

Kurdistan Region President Masoud Barzani described the meeting on June 7 in which the parties set the date for referendum on Kurdistan Region independence as “historic and important.”

Barzani released a handwritten statement on his official Facebook account on Thursday in which he lauded the decision made by Kurdistan parties in Wednesday’s meeting to hold a survey on independence on September 25 this year.

“The meeting on June 7, 2017 was historic and important, and it is a valuable achievement for the people of Kurdistan and the sacrifices of martyrs,” the statement reads.

Barzani thanked Peshmerga forces and all the parties who sensibly and responsibly took a national and historic attitude by participating in the meeting.

“It is also a great source of pride to the sides who participated in the meeting and made a historic decision to enable people of Kurdistan to convey their voice and will to the world,” the statement continues.

“I hope this step will lead to the national unity and reconciliation among the political parties,” Barzani said.

He reiterated that the people of Kurdistan are willing to take peaceful means to achieve their “natural rights.”

“The people of Kurdistan are willing to achieve their natural rights through peace, rather than violence. Therefore, we want to have the best relations and mutual understanding with Baghdad, our neighbours and regional countries.”

Barzani attributed the success and achievements the Kurds have gained to the sacrifices of the Peshmerga and the martyrs.

“We must not forget that our achievements and successes are the outcome of the blood of our martyrs.”

In a meeting chaired by Kurdistan Region President Masoud Barzani on Wednesday, the political parties set September 25th, 2017 as the date for the referendum on Kurdistan Region independence.
