UK Envoy Arrested at Tehran Protest
The UK Ambassador to Iran Robert Macaire has been arrested during the new anti-government protests outside a university in Tehran.
People started to take to the streets in Iran after the country’s government admitted on Saturday morning that it had mistakenly struck a Ukrainian passenger plane last week which killed over 170 people.
According to the Iranian Tasnim news agency, Macaire was detained for more than one hour as he was accused by Iran of “inciting protests.”
“The arrest of our ambassador in Tehran without grounds or explanation is a flagrant violation of international law,” Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab, said in a statement.
“The Iranian government is at a crossroads moment. It can continue its march towards pariah status with all the political and economic isolation that entails, or take steps to de-escalate tensions and engage in a diplomatic path forwards.” Source
