Erbil Governor Says Lockdown to Be Prolonged
Erbil Governor Firsat Sofi said on Tuesday that the general lockdown in Kurdistan Region would be extended.
“There will new instructions for the extend period of the lockdown,” Sofi told Kurdistan 24 without elaborating on the period or the specifics.
“We have passed the most difficult times,” the governor said, thanking the people for abiding by the lockdown instructions.
On March 13, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) ordered a traffic ban which was followed by a general lockdown across the region as part of its plans to fight the spread of the new coronavirus.
Health authorities have already suggested KRG’s ministry of interior another extension to the current lockdown, which is due to expire midnight March 31.
The total number of COVID-19 cases in the Kurdistan Region is 162, as health ministry reported on Tuesday, noting that 57 people have recovered and only 2 deaths were registered. Source
