Iraq’s Basra Announces Complete Lockdown as Coronavirus Infections Soar
Iraq’s southern province of Basra announced a “complete lockdown” on Saturday after the province witnessed a significant increase in the number of COVID-19 cases.
Basra Joint Operations Commander said the new lockdown includes all vehicle and pedestrian movements across the province.
Previous permissions issued by authorities to allow certain movements are all canceled, commander of the Joint Operations told the media.
Additional police and security forces are now deployed to the streets to enforce the lockdown, the commander said, warning that any violation would be faced with legal actions.
The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Iraq has reached 17,770, with 496 deaths. The country is struggling now with a new wave of the pandemic. Source
