PM Barzani “Optimistic” about Erbil-Baghdad Agreement
Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Friday expressed his optimism about an agreement between Erbil and Baghdad.
“I’m optimistic we can reach a final settlement with the federal government,” the Kurdish prime minister wrote on Twitter.
“While there have been many obstacles, we have a strong negotiating team, drawn from across the KRG and united in its purpose,” he added.
The KRG has formed a delegation which frequently visits Baghdad to lead the negotiations for a solution to the prolonged disputes. The delegation is headed by Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani, from the PUK.
The comments come days after Iraqi PM Mustafa al-Kadhimi’s first visit to the Kurdistan Region, which was later described as “a good gesture” by the KRG.
PM Barzani also made it clear that the KRG is seeking a constitutional solution to the disputes with Baghdad in order to bring certainty to the strategic partnership between the sides.
“Our starting point in our talks with the federal government has been clear – a settlement can only last if it is under the framework of the constitution,” the Kurdish leader said. “Constructive relations between Erbil and Baghdad are vital to the future stability of our region and Iraq.” Source
