KRG Committed to Assisting Iraq in Fighting IS: PM Barzani
The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) would remain committed to assisting Iraq in the fight against the Islamic State (IS), PM Masrour Barzani confirmed on Sunday.
Barzani made the remarks during a meeting with an Iraqi delegation headed by Falih Fayyadh, the chairman of the Popular Mobilization Forces, also known as Hashd al-Shaabi.
Chief of Staff of the Iraqi Army Lieutenant-General Abdul Amir Yarallah also attended the meeting, Barzani’s office said in a statement, adding that regional developments and areas of cooperation were discussed in the meeting.
“During the meeting, the officials recognised the ongoing threat ISIS poses to the security and stability of the country, and in disputed territories in particular,” reads the statement. “Prime Minister Barzani reaffirmed that the Kurdistan Regional Government remains committed to assisting in the fight against ISIS.”
The two sides stressed on the importance of continued as well as strengthened cooperation between the Peshmerga fighters and Iraqi forces, the statement added.
“Acknowledging the need for broader political cooperation, the two sides stressed the need for a constitutional solution to the ongoing disputes between the Kurdistan Regional Government and the federal government of Iraq.” Source
