Iraq Sends Reinforcements to Diyala
Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi on Sunday called for strengthening military forces in Diyala province so as to tighten the security in the area, a statement said.
“The PM has ordered the Ministries of Defense and Interior to strengthen the police and military forces in Diyala governorate to boost security and stability,” Iraq’s Security Media Cell said in a statement, as cited by Asharq Al-Awsat.
This comes as the security situation has lately deteriorated in Diyala province where calls were made to disarm militias and other armed groups in order to normalize the situation.
A high-level delegation, including intelligence and security officials, which was headed by the National Security Adviser, arrived in Diyala on Saturday to evaluate the situation, the statement added.
The report cited observers as revealing that many armed groups have already taken full control over some areas in Diyala. Source
