Iraq Hopes to Complete Trench Along Syrian Border in Two Months
The Iraqi Army hopes that it will complete digging a trench along the Syrian border in two months, an official said on Thursday.
The army has long started the project in hopes of preventing the penetration and movement of Islamic State (IS) militants from Syria into Iraq.
Tahsin Khafaji, a spokesperson for Joint Operations Command, said 140 out of 220 km of border strip is now secured with a trench.
According to the official, the trench is 3 meters wide and 3 meters deep, believed to be able to stop IS movements on the border.
The US-led Global Coalition is helping the Iraqi Army with observation towers and barbed wire, Khafaji added.
