Drone Attack Targets US Forces in Iraq: Coalition Spokesperson
An explosive-laden drone on Saturday targeted Ain al-Asad Air Base in western Iraq where US forces are stationed.
The attack was carried at 0220 local time (GMT+3) and it damaged a hanger, with no casualties, according to Wayne Morotto, a spokesperson for the US-led Global Coalition.
Morotto confirmed that an “ unmanned aerial surveillance system” was used to attack the airbase this time, and that an investigation is underway to reveal details of the attack.
“Each attack against the GoI, KRG and Coalition undermines the authority of Iraqi institutions, the rule of law and Iraqi national sovereignty,” the Coalition spokesperson added.
This is the second such attack carried out via an explosive-laden drone. The first attack targeted the Coalition forces station at the Erbil International Airport in mid-April.
