PM Barzani Opens Giant Steel Factory in Erbil
Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Tuesday inaugurated the largest steel factory in the Kurdistan Region which is expected to create over 1,000 new jobs to supply the local and regional markets.
The $100 million project, named Med Steel, is built on 40,000 square meter in southwest of Erbil, the capital of Kurdistan Region. It is designed to produce 350,000 tons of steel annually.
During a speech, PM Barzani said the project was part of his cabinet’s commitment to its plan of helping the private sector contribute to the development of Kurdistan.
“I am pleased to see this factory built at world standards which is now the largest of its kind in Kurdistan Region and Iraq,” the Kurdish premier said.
“We do not just make promises, but we fulfill them,” he added to remind that his cabinet is committed to diversify KRG’s sources of revenues so it will not solely depend on oil.
“We are doing our best to build the infrastructure needed to put the Kurdistan Region on the map of developed countries,” he said.
