Kurdistan Remains Firm to Holding Independence Vote in September: Official
Kurdistan Region remains firm about holding the vote on independence on September 25th, despite the US request to postpone it, said a Kurdish official on Saturday.
“The date is standing, Sept. 25, no change,” Hoshyar Zebari, a close adviser to Kurdistan Region President Masoud Barzani, told Reuters on Saturday.
During a phone call on Thursday, the US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson requested Barzani to postpone the September vote.
However, Barzani was not convinced by the request, reiterating that there isn’t a better alternative to the referendum at this stage.
The US State Department said in June that it is concerned that the referendum will cause distraction from “more urgent priorities” such as the defeat of the Islamic State militants.
