PM Barzani Reiterates Support for Religious Freedom, Coexistence

Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Saturday received a delegation of bishops from the autonomous region and Ninevah plain, reiterating his support for the freedom of religion and coexistence.

During the meeting in the capital Erbil, “Prime Minister Barzani reiterated his support for promoting forgiveness, coexistence, religious freedom, and human rights in the Kurdistan Region,” the premier’s office said in a press release.

The two sides exchanged views on the situation of Christians in the region and commended the peaceful coexistence spirit preserved among the different ethnic and religious groups in the Kurdistan Region, according to the press release.

“Both sides discussed the situation of Christians locally and praised the coexistence in the Kurdistan Region, noting it is a unique place where they live in peace and their rights are preserved.”

The bishops further thanked Prime Minister Barzani “for protecting the rights of every one, carrying out reforms, and steering the country away from the crises.”

The Kurdish premier also received the new Bangladesh ambassador to Iraq, Mohammed Fazlulbari, in a separate meeting earlier the day. Barzani congratulated the Bangladeshi envoy “on assuming office and wished him well in his role.”

According to a press release by Barzani’s office, the Bangladeshi ambassador expressed gratitude to the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) “and said his country wants to strengthen ties with the Kurdistan Region.”
