France to Cooperate with KRG to Develop Economic Ties: Macron

France will continue to cooperate with the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) in efforts to develop the economic and social relations, French President Emmanuel Macron has stated in an official letter to PM Masrour Barzani.

The “key message” was delivered by the French Consul General to Erbil, Olivier Decottignies, during his meeting with the Kurdish prime minister in the capital city on Thursday, Barzani’s office said in a press release.

“In his letter President Macron thanked PM Barzani for his warm welcome in Erbil,” the press release added. “He told the Premier that Kurdistan Region and France enjoy an ‘enduring and unique relationship,’ that must be maintained as a priority.”

“President Macron pledged France will ‘continue to cooperate’ with the KRG in stopping terrorism and will also strive further to develop economic and social relations.”

The French president in August paid an official visit to the Kurdistan Region after attending a regional summit in the Iraqi capital Baghdad for regional development and cooperation.

During his stay in Erbil, Macron held separate meetings with the senior Kurdish leaders, in which he renewed Paris’ commitment to continued support for the Kurds.

The Kurdistan Region and France enjoy a historic friendship. The French leader, in a similar letter to President Nechirvan Barzani earlier the day, pointed out that Erbil and Paris have unique ties which should be kept strong.
