Iraqi Forces Amassed Around Makhmour for Anti-IS Assault
The Iraqi army and Shi’ite militias of Hashd al-Shaabi have reportedly sent reinforcement to the suburb of Makmour district, southwest Erbil, in preparation for a fresh campaign against the Islamic State (IS) in the area.
Kirmanj Abdullah, a local representative for the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) in Makhmour, confirmed the report to BasNews and said that the new deployment is aimed at encountering the increasing IS movements in the area.
“The Iraqi forces are practically in control of the center of the towns in the area, and the remote territories remain free for the militants to roam,” Abdullah said.
“The Iraqi forces are deploying additional forces as there is the threat of certain areas falling into the hands of IS again.”
Earlier on Saturday, according to Abdullah, multiple airstrikes coordinated between the Peshmerga forces and US-led coalition targeted several IS hideouts on Mount Qarachokh, killing several jihadists. Source
