Abadi-Sadr Alliance Facilitated by Saudi Arabia: Report

There had been a secret meeting among the representatives of Victory Alliance, led by Haider al-Abadi, Sa’eroun Alliance, headed by Iraqi Shi’ite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr and Saudi Arabia’s influential minister of Gulf Affairs, Thamer al-Sabhan in Jordan’s Amman city, just a few days before announcing the new coalition of the two Iraqi leaders, said a report on Monday.

According to Arabi21 news agency, citing a reliable source, the main aim of the meeting was to help the two Iraqi officials reach an agreement, according to which Abadi will remain the Prime Minister of Iraq.

Abadi, who came in third in last month’s parliamentary election, and the winner of the election, Sadr, declared on Saturday a political alliance between their blocs.

The source said that Sadr, according to the agreement, is expected to support Abadi in the process and try to persuade Iran to not remove the current prime minister from his office. Source
