Iraq Seeks a 2-Year Waiver from US to Continue Importing Iranian Gas
The Iraqi government is asking the United State for an extension to the waiver over purchasing gas from neighboring Iran.
Earlier in November following the imposition of the US sanctions against Iran, Washington gave Baghdad 45 days exemption to continue importing gas for its power plants from Iran. Iraq was expected to find and alternative source after the deadline.
Hayyan Abdulqani, head of Iraq’s Southern Gas Company, said that his country’s capacity in supplying its power plants with natural gas is limited.
Iraq needs at least 24 months to increase its capacity and meet the demand.
The official explained that the US is expected to take the situation of Iraq into consideration and, therefore, give Baghdad a 2-year waiver to continue importing gas from Iran until the end of 2020. Source
