Turkey Argues S-400 Purchase Shouldn’t Trigger US Sanctions
Turkey has argued that purchasing Russia’s S-400 missile defense system should not trigger US sanctions, noting that Ankara is not an advisory of Washington, Defence Minister Hulusi Akar said on Monday.
“We firmly believe that linking the S-400 to the F-35 project is unfortunate,” he said, as quoted by Reuters. “We expect the United States and other project partners to honour their commitments.”
The US has several times warned its NATO ally of buying the Russian air defence system, threatening to remove Ankara from the F-35 program if Turkey is determined to buy it anyway.
Washington, instead of the purchase of the S-400s, has offered Turkey to buy the US Patriot missiles. Source
