Iraq to Recover Thousands of Antiquities from US: PM
Iraq in the near future will recover 15,000 antiquities from the US, Prime Minister Adil Abdul-Mahdi said on Tuesday.
“Iraq was and will always remain a cultural and historical center, and we must make use of this great legacy to build the present and future of the country,” Abdul-Mahdi said during his visit to the National Museum of Iraq, as quoted by Iraqi News, also praising the museum as “a great learning and humanitarian edifice.”
The museum, which is home to a large number of ancient objects dating back to various pre-modern, modern, contemporary and Islamic periods, was attacked by the Islamic State (IS) jihadist group in 2014.
The militants at the time released a series of videos in which they smashed artifacts at Mosul Museum while exploding some parts of the site of the Assyrian capital of Nimrud. Source
