Sadr meets Iran-allied Amiri, discusses next govt formation
Prominent Shia cleric Moqtada Al Sadr has discussed with leader of Al Fatih Alliance Hadi Al Amiri the proposals for an inclusive government, Sadr’s office said in a statement.
Saairun Alliance that is backed by Al Sadr has won 54 seats in the May 12 elections, not an outright majority that makes it form the government.
Amiri’s al-Fatih coalition, strongly supported by Iran, finished second with 47 seats, followed by current PM Haider al-Abadi’s Nasr (Victory) coalition.
According to the statement, Al Sadr stressed on the need for all winning blocs to participate in the formation of the next government.
According to analysts, the negotiations for the next government would take months.
Three candidates are competing for the post of prime minister: Abadi, his predecessor Nouri al-Maliki, and Amiri. Source
