Trump’s visit condemners are pro-Iran: Alusi
Former MP and Head of the Iraqi Ummah Party Mithal al-Alusi expressed his welcome on Thursday to US President Donald Trump’s visit to Iraq, saying that all those rejecting the visit are pro-Iran and do not represent Iraq or Iraqis.
“On behalf of all the free Iraqis, we welcome the visit of the US President,” Alusi said in a statement, wishing that Trump could have stayed longer, in order to meet with “real Iraqis, not those who have lost their identity.”
Alusi said that the visit is normal as the US is a major state that Iraq has agreements with, adding that the visit was accepted by the Iraqi government. He added that the visit is not one of kind, it has been conducted by former US presidents during the reigns of Nouri al-Maliki and Ibrahim al-Jaafari.
Just one day after Christmas, Trump and his wife Melania arrived in Anbar to visit the US troops serving in the region, which is his first such visit since taking office in January 2017.
Prime Minister Adil Abdul Mahdi said on Thursday that he was supposed to meet with the US President Donald Trump during his visit to Iraq, but the meeting was cancelled due to “disagreement over how to conduct the meeting,” the two leaders spoke by phone instead.
The US said the visit was cancelled because of logistic and security issues. Source
