Sulaymaniyah airport announces the start of international flights in the Kurdistan Region

International airport flights will be launched to and from the airports of the Kurdistan Region on 15 March this year, Sulaymaniyah International Airport Director Tahir Abdullah said on Tuesday.

Taher expressed his thanks to the Kurdistan Regional Government, the Ministry of Transport and Communications in the Region, the Parliamentary Services Committee of the Iraqi Council of Representatives, the Federal Government and all parties that contributed to lifting the ban on international flights from Arbil and Sulaymaniyah airports.

Officials at Erbil and Sulaymaniyah airports said earlier in the day that they were waiting for the decision to formally lift the ban on international flights to come.

Officials told Ashqaf News that they had heard through international and local media that Abbadi had ended the international ban on airports in the Kurdistan Region.

They said they were awaiting the arrival of an official letter from the federal government in Baghdad, which provides for the decision to lift the ban, noting that after the arrival of the resolution by 48 hours, the airports will be ready to receive and bid farewell to international flights.

Abadi announced earlier today the reopening of Arbil and Sulaymaniyah airports for international flights after a ban lasting more than five months.

The federal authorities in Baghdad have imposed a ban on international flights from Erbil airport since September 29 in response to the referendum on independence held in the Kurdistan Region.

Baghdad partially lifted the ban on Erbil and Sulaymaniyah airports, including Hajj and Umrah trips.

The Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region, Nezhirvan Barzani, expressed earlier in the day his thanks to the Federal Prime Minister Haider Abadi on lifting the ban on international flights from Erbil and Sulaymaniyah international airports.

Barzani said in a press conference held today in Erbil that “Mr. Abadi had announced in an interview with officials and officers of the ministries of interior in the region and Baghdad to lift the international ban on international flights on airports in Kurdistan,” echoing by saying, “The Kurdistan Regional Government welcomes this step, Fall in the path and we hope that the remaining differences and outstanding issues between Erbil and Baghdad in accordance with the permanent Iraqi constitution and thank all those who contributed to it.

He added that “the lifting of the ban on airports is the outcome of fruitful discussions between me and al-Said Abadi,” noting that “the decision to reopen the airports of the Kurdistan Region has been banned between Erbil and Baghdad.”

Barzani said that the issue of airport management detailed and technical and the Constitution is the most clear features and will be managed as stipulated by the Constitution and the ban signed between the two sides.
