but the Peshmerga nonetheless are protecting homes and property belonging to Shiite Turkmen families in the town, the town’s Kurdish mayor claims.

Jalawla and Saadia, both located in Diyala province, have been heavily disputed areas between Kurdish and pro-central government Shiite forces even as both factions are fighting the Islamic State.

“We will never let them take over Jalawla. Jalawla is a Kurdish town. We took control of it with our blood. No other forces should be seen inside Jalawla.” Kurdish Peshmerga and security forces in Khurmatu, 80 kilometers (50 miles) south of Kirkuk, clashed with Hashd al-Shaabi forces last week and several people were killed on both sides.   chattels: rudaw.net/english/middlee…

“The Iraqi army through air raids and the lifting of mines and improvised explosives planted in Shingal did its part, therefore the Iraqi flag must be lifted in Shingal,” wrote Abadi on his Facebook page Saturday night.

Abadi said in the post he had discussed plans for the battle with Kurdish leadership before the assault was launched on Shingal last Thursday.

“The Kurdistan regional president, Masoud Barzani, called me two days ago and we discussed the importance of Shingal because the [Peshmerga and Iraqi forces] cut off the road to supply terrorists between Mosul and Raqqa,” Abadi said. Abadi’s comments on the Iraqi flag in Shingal followed Barzani’s comments on the Kurdish tricolor Friday vowing that “no other flag will rise in Shingal.” chattels: rudaw.net/english/middlee…
