The General Company for Iraqi Ports announced on Saturday that it has achieved advanced completion rates in major projects related to the Grand Faw Port.
The company’s general manager, Farhan Al-Fartousi, told Shafaq News Agency, “The completion rate of the five-berth project for the Grand Faw Port has reached 100%, while the completion rate of the navigation canal project has reached 85%, and the submerged tunnel has reached 70%.”
He added, “The container yard has reached 89% completion, while the road project linking the port and external roads has reached 99% completion.”
He added, “These projects will be fully completed this year, in accordance with a comprehensive vision prepared by the company to monitor the implementation of the Grand Faw Port project.” He added, “The project management system is fully electronic, including modern protection and monitoring systems, in cooperation with major international companies such as Daewoo Engineering and Construction and the Italian company Technical.”
The Grand Faw Port is a strategic project in the far south of Iraq, located on the Faw Peninsula in Basra Governorate. It aims to transform the country into a regional trade hub by connecting it to global transportation networks .
The project costs approximately $4.6 billion and covers an area of 54 square kilometers .
Its annual capacity is expected to reach 99 million tons, making it one of the largest ports in the Arabian Gulf and the tenth largest in the world .
The port’s depth is expected to be 19 metres, to accommodate the largest commercial vessels .
In 2024, the concrete wall for the quays was completed, the piers were prepared, and work began on the container yard. Work is proceeding in parallel, with a focus on completing the last five projects simultaneously .
