Shafaq News / The Iraqi National Security Council, headed by Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, was briefed on the delegation’s visit to Washington and approved its agreement with the American side to form a joint high committee with the international coalition, to start implementing the outputs of the joint dialogue.
The spokesman for the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Major General Yahya Rasool Abdullah, said in a statement received by Shafaq News Agency that the Prime Minister, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, chaired, on Monday evening, a meeting of the Ministerial Council for National Security, in the presence of the members of the Council. The meeting witnessed a discussion of the latest security developments, the most important challenges, and ways to confront them.
During the meeting, they also discussed the approval of Iraq’s accession to the international database at the United Nations, on lost and stolen weapons in Iraq and the world, with the aim of controlling this type of weapons.
In another axis, the council discussed the entry of Arab and foreign fishermen into the country during the hunting theme, and appropriate decisions were taken in this regard.
The Council heard a detailed summary of the visit of the Iraqi delegation, headed by Defense Minister Thabet Mohammed Al-Abbasi, to Washington at the invitation of the US Secretary of Defense.
He was briefed on a review of the joint dialogue between the two countries, which dealt with bilateral security cooperation within the strategic framework agreement, the shape of the future relationship between Iraq and the international coalition to combat terrorism, the Iraqi delegation’s emphasis on the constants related to Iraq’s sovereignty, and the growing capabilities of its armed forces of various types and carrying out their tasks in protecting security and stability and securing the country’s borders.
In addition, the delegation put forward the Iraqi view during the course of the dialogue, on the absence of the need for the presence of any foreign combat forces on Iraqi territory.
After reviewing the course of the dialogue, the Council approved the agreement of the Iraqi delegation with the American side to form a joint higher committee with the international coalition, to start implementing the outputs of the joint dialogue.
In this context, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, the Chief of Staff of the Army, directed contact with the leadership of the international coalition in Iraq to start the work of the bilateral committee.
The Council also appreciated the efforts of the Iraqi delegation and its emphasis on the integration of Iraqi security capabilities, and the preservation of the requirements of Iraqi sovereignty in all its aspects.
On August 9, the US-Iraq Joint Security Dialogue (JSCD) concluded with the signing of the minutes of the meeting, which emphasized the bilateral commitment to ongoing security and defense cooperation in all areas, including the mission to eliminate the Iraqi-led ISIS.
The US Department of Defense and the Iraqi Ministry of Defense led the opening of the US-Iraq Joint Security Cooperation Dialogue in Washington, D.C., from August 7-8, 2023, and reaffirmed their commitment to security cooperation and their common interests in regional stability, according to a statement issued by the US Embassy on Wednesday.
A high-level delegation headed by Iraqi Defense Minister Thabit Mohammed al-Abbasi, which included the head of the Counter-Terrorism Service, the Chief of Staff of the Army, the Deputy Commander of the Joint Operations Command – Iraq, and other senior officials, began a visit last Monday to the United States of America, at the official invitation of the US Department of Defense (Pentagon).
