The Central Oil Company announced, on Monday, the start of production of 11,000 barrels of oil per day from the deepest horizontal well in the East Baghdad field (southern region), in a major achievement, the first of its kind in Iraq.
The company stated, in a statement received by Shafaq News Agency, that “the company’s engineers, in cooperation with the Chinese company (EBS), which operates the East Baghdad field/southern region, succeeded in producing more than 11 thousand barrels per day from the oil well that was recently drilled horizontally at a depth of 5,282 meters. “The first of its kind in Iraq.”
According to the statement, advanced methods and equipment were used in the process of drilling and extracting crude oil, which resulted in the achievement of this national achievement.
The start of production from the new well will allow to enhance the supply of fuel operating the country’s power stations, including the Al-Quds Electrical Station east of Baghdad, according to the statement.
Horizontal drilling for oil wells has several characteristics, the most important of which is achieving production rates estimated at three times that of regular wells. It contributes to reducing financial costs, as it compensates for drilling three regular wells, and solves the problem of land acquisition, as one field is invested for drilling, instead of three sites.
