Fox News revealed that US President-elect Donald Trump jokingly suggested “annexing Canada” to be the 51st US state during a recent meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Trudeau traveled to Mar-a-Lago last week after Trump threatened to impose sweeping tariffs on Canadian products.
Trump is threatening to impose 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico for failing to curb the flow of illegal immigrants and illegal drugs from those countries into the United States.
The president-elect made it clear to the Canadian prime minister during the last meeting that if Canada cannot fix its border problems and trade deficit, he will impose a 25% tariff on all Canadian goods on the first day he returns to office.
Trudeau told Trump, according to Fox News, that raising tariffs on his country’s goods would kill the Canadian economy, to which Trump joked, “Then Canada should become the 51st state.”
