larrykn says():Western Mosul to be fully liberated on Friday, military official expects

Mosul (IraqiNews.com) An Iraqi army official in Nineveh province has expected full liberation of the western side of Mosul by end of this week.

“Iraqi troops were able to retake most the regions and districts in western Mosul from Islamic State militants,” a commander in the Iraqi army told Sputnik on Tuesday, expecting the whole region to be freed by Friday.

In a statement earlier on Tuesday, Federal Police Chief Lt.Gen. Shaker Jawdat announced his troops are in control of 80 percent of Iqtisidayeen and 17 Tamuz (July 17th) districts, in addition to eight other pivotal targets that were previously retaken.

“The troops shelled IS defenses as well as their headquarters in north of the Old City and killed dozens of the militants. Fifteen square km were freed, 168 booby-trapped vehicles were destroyed, 200 landmines were removed while 24 bombs were defused,” he added.

“Six families detained by IS in 17 Tamuz were freed. They were kept for several days inside one of the houses with the doors locked and the house booby-trapped to prevent them escape,” he added.

“The total number of families evacuated from battlefields have reached 850 so far since the start of the last phase of military operations in western Mosul on May 6,” Jawdat said.

In a press conference, the Joint Operations Command declared on Tuesday controlling 89.5 percent of western Mosul and killing 16,467 members of Islamic State since beginning of operations in western Mosul.

Iraqi commanders had predicted recapturing the remaining parts of the city this month

larrykn says():Hashd al-Shaabi controls four more villages in Shingal, vows to continue operation

The statement added that the villages of Sarai Garaj, Talzananir, Talzia and Talbashuk near Qairawa town were now under the control of the Hashd forces.

According to the Shiite group’s media the Yezidi populated complex of Tal Qasab surrounded by the Hashd will soon be under their control as it is a center for sending assistance to the group.

The state-backed group continue their newest offensive for a fifth day in a row. They are working to recapture the remaining areas still under control of the extremist group near the Syrian border.

The main objective for the newest offensive is Qairawan and Baa’j located west of Mosul and close to the Syrian border, commander of the Hashd al-Shaabi Mahdi al-Muhandis said on Friday.

There are 13 villages and complexes in Qairawan town in the Shingal region, falling under Article 140 of the Iraqi constitution. The Hashd aims to control all of them, something Kurdish leaders, most notably President Masoud Barzani has opposed.

However, Hadi Amiri, leader of the Badr Organization, an influential force within the Hashd ,has said that their advances would continue.

Five days into the offensive, Ahmed Asadi explained in a press conference on Monday that the Hashd al-Shaabi had brought 300 kilometers under control with another 1,500 controlled before.

Asadi added that as many as 36 villages were also controlled.

“In the next phases we will reach Baaj and other areas all the way to the Iraq-Syria border,” said Asadi, adding “reaching the border is our main objective so as to cut ISIS from entering Iraq and that those besieged inside Iraq will be eliminated.”

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — After the Turkish government prohibited German parlimentarians from inspecting its soldiers at an airbase in Incirlik, Turkey, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Berlin will explore other options including Jordan.

“We will continue to talk with Turkey, but in parallel we will have to explore other ways of fulfilling our mandate,” Merkel said on Monday. Germany, as a member of the international coalition against ISIS in Iraq and Syria and per its agreement with Turkey, uses the airbase to station its Tornado reconnaissance jets. The coalition by air supports the Kurdish Peshmerga and Kurdish-majority Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) ground fighters.

The German newspaper Die Welt reported that multiple times deputies from parliament’s defense committee have asked to inspect the 250 airmen at the base — most recently last week. However, Turkish authorities have cancelled their requests with 48 hours of notice.

“The Bundeswahr are an army under the parliament and it is absolutely essential that its members have the opportunity to able to inspect their soldiers,” Merkel added.

“That means looking at searching for alternatives to Incirlik, and one alternative among others is Jordan,” she said speaking at an event to celebrate her Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party’s state election win in the western federal state of North Rhine Westphalia.

German officials were allowed to visit Incirlik last year only after Merkel said that the reports of their inspections would not be legally binding, according to Die Welt.

Lawmakers in Berlin have repeatedly requested that Ankara guarantee a permanent right of inspection.

”This is the essence of the issue. If a technical military team wants to come from Germany when there are already German troops deployed here, [Ankara] does not consider it appropriate for the rest of the delegation to come,” the Turkish Daily Sabah reported Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu as saying last week.

The German Defense ministry prepared a report earlier this year that identified eight possible new suitable sites in Jordan, Kuwait and Cyprus.

German-Turkish diplomacy has been strained in the run up to Turkey’s referendum on 18 constitutional amendments after Germany denied Turkish politicians from holding rallies for expatriates living in Germany.

“If I want to come to Germany, I will, and if you don’t let me in through your doors, if you don’t let me speak, then I will make the world rise to its feet,” Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan
