ERBIL — The United Nations Security Council is set to hold a session about the situation of Iraq on Monday, May 22, 2017 at 3 p.m. New York time (10 p.m. Baghdad time).
The Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Iraq, Ján KubiÅ¡, will brief the session on latest developments in Iraq and the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), according to UNAMI’s press release.
As the Islamic State (IS) organization is nearing its demise in Mosul with losing around 90 percent of the city, the organization is resorting to further escalating violence in the country, particularly in the capital Baghdad which has recently witnessed a series of terror attacks.
According to UNAMI’s monthly report, violence and armed conflicts claimed the lives of 317 Iraqis, and caused injuries to 403 others during the month of April alone.
