IBAN is the International Banking Account Number. It gives every account a unique string that identifies the country, the city where the account is held and the number of the account. It’s now required for transactions in Europe, with a fee charged to transactions that aren’t done with it. (as I understand it, the old way can’t be automated)
But why doesn’t the US sign up for it? It couldn’t be any simpler – instead of sharing your name, your bank account number (which is formatted differently depending on the bank and country) and the name and address of your bank, you just give someone a 19-24 digit code.
Because it’s not yet universally adapted, we also have to use the BIC (Bank Identifier Code), which is a short string of numbers/letters – but that could be avoided if other countries started using IBAN, too.
I guess I’m looking for the reason why a country would not use this – from what I can tell it not only makes life easier for bank customers, but also reduces the cost of transactions for banks. (and hence for customers)

I’m moving to CH, and my employer is going to open the cantonal bank account to deposit my paycheck into.
No problem. I’m ok with that.
My US bank does not have an IBAN number, and I just went through a huge ordeal over a reimbursement because of this.
I’m thinking it might make my life easier in der Schweiz if I move my US banking to a bank that can give me an IBAN, or maybe an ‘global’ bank like HSBC. Since I’ll still have rental income and tax returns, etc in the US, I’d like to have an account that can receive those deposits, but also have the flexibility to be easily accessed to transfer money to/from my Swiss account.
Does anyone have any recommendations?

As you correctly state US banks don’t use IBAN numbers but Bank of America has a ‘dummy’ IBAN called BOFAUS3N and I have been able to make transfers via UBS direct to BoA online using that code. It did take BoA a few days to work out how to do this but it has worked without problems in transferring money to the US.

You can set up a transfer from your account as “international transfer without iban” you include you us account info – Aba routing and account, address of bank and it should work. I do it every month or so to my BoA account. Takes 3-5 days, so plan accordingly. Works from credit-Suisse anyway.

I can transfer money to my US account no problem using my PostFianance account. I do it online. I just give them the ABA number and my account number.
Yes, I opened a PostFinance account at that was the cheapest/easiest I found for transferring money to the US.
Otherwise, open a UBS account in the US.
