HDBank chairman honoured among Việt Nam’s outstanding entrepreneurs vietnamnews

The triennial programme evaluates business performance over 2021-25, focusing on governance capabilities, innovation, corporate social responsibility and ethical standards.

The award features Thánh Gióng, symbolising patriotism and community unity.

In the banking sector, only three leaders were featured in the Top 10 list – HDBank, Vietcombank and BIDV.

Other prominent figures awarded alongside him included leaders from major conglomerates, including BRG, TH, Geleximco, Sunshine Group and IPPG.

As the first foreign chairman in HDBank’s history, Kim Byoungho brings nearly four decades of international financial experience across South Korea, the United States, China, Indonesia and Việt Nam.

Prior to joining HDBank, he held senior executive leadership roles at Hana Bank and Hana Financial Group, steering major institutional transformations, expansion strategies and international partnerships.

Since assuming his role in April 2022, he has connected global governance standards with local practices.

Under his stewardship, HDBank implemented Basel III in 2023 – becoming one of the few pioneer banks in Việt Nam to adopt this demanding risk management framework.

The bank was recognised in 2025 among the top five Listed Companies in Việt Nam for Best Corporate Governance at the ASEAN Corporate Governance Awards under the ASEAN Corporate Governance Scorecard framework, where chairman Kim directly represented the bank to receive the honour in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Between 2021 and 2026, the bank experienced a strong growth cycle.

Total assets expanded from VNĐ374.6 trillion (US$14.5 billion) to over VNĐ1 quadrillion ($38.7 billion), pre-tax profit targeted more than VNĐ30 trillion ($1.2 billion) and equity capital rose from VNĐ30.8 trillion to over VNĐ110 trillion ($4.3 billion).

Return on equity was maintained between 23 per cent and over 25 per cent for five consecutive years.

In 2025, S&P Global Market Intelligence ranked HDBank first among Vietnamese banks and second for operational efficiency among Southeast Asia’s top 50 listed banks.

Financial strength was further validated in 2026 when Moody’s maintained a B1 rating with a “Positive” outlook, while Fitch Ratings assigned a BB- long-term issuer rating with a “Stable” outlook, matching the highest intrinsic credit profile among Vietnamese banks.

The bank expanded international integration through partnerships with the IFC, ADB, FMO, BII, Standard Chartered and the London Stock Exchange.

Notably, it secured a record $721 million syndicated social loan co-coordinated by ADB and Standard Chartered, scaled up 60 per cent from its original $450 million target to become the largest syndicated social loan ever raised by a Vietnamese entity.

In September, it received three accolades at the Euromoney Awards for Excellence 2026, including “Best Retail Bank in Asia”, “Best Retail Bank in Vietnam” and “Best Bank for SMEs in Vietnam”.

During 2021-25, it contributed VNĐ16.5 trillion to the State budget and disbursed over VNĐ42 trillion in green credit for renewable energy, clean agriculture, and green transport.

Average employee income across its 18,000 workforce surged 40.6 per cent, sharing growth achievements with staff and the national economy.
