Iraq and Australia discuss trade, WTO membership support Iraqi News

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – The Iraqi Federation of Chambers of Commerce announced today, Tuesday (September 23, 2025), that it has held talks with the Australian Ambassador in Baghdad to discuss strengthening trade relations and securing Australia’s support for Iraq’s bid to join the World Trade Organization (WTO).

According to Abdul Razzaq Al-Zuhairi, the president of the federation, the meeting covered a number of key issues. Discussions focused on the volume of trade between the two countries and the possibility of signing a memorandum of understanding with the Australian Federation of Chambers of Commerce to form joint business councils. The goal of these councils would be to encourage the transfer of Australian industry and investment into Iraq.

Al-Zuhairi added that strengthening these relations is a key step in Iraq’s efforts to join the WTO, which is a major part of the country’s economic reform strategy. The meeting is seen as a positive move toward fostering a closer economic partnership between Iraq and Australia and furthering Iraq’s goal of integrating into the global economy.
