Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) — Iraq’s Ministry of Electricity and GE Vernova have reaffirmed their partnership to boost the country’s power generation and grid reliability, co-hosting a workshop in Baghdad focused on meeting Iraq’s growing energy demand.
The event, titled “Pathways to Meeting Iraq’s Energy Demand,” brought together officials from key Iraqi ministries and diplomats from the United States, United Kingdom, and France.
Discussions centered on expanding capacity, improving efficiency, and modernizing the grid through advanced technologies.
GE Vernova showcased several solutions, including high-efficiency gas turbines, AGP XPAND upgrades for existing plants, and systems to capture and use flared gas.
The company also highlighted grid modernization technologies such as HVDC transmission, Synchronous Condensers, and digital tools like GridOS and GridBeats to enhance monitoring and automation.
The Ministry and GE Vernova are jointly developing a Monitoring and Diagnostics Center in Baghdad to strengthen grid performance and train Iraqi engineers in electrification technologies.
Recent collaboration between the two sides has added about 1,000 megawatts to the national grid through turbine upgrades. A new 9F.04 gas turbine at the Besmaya Power Plant raised its output to nearly 5,000 megawatts, while the Bazyan Power Plant introduced GE Vernova’s AGP XPAND upgrade to boost generation efficiency.
Over the past 15 years, cooperation between Iraq and GE Vernova has delivered more than 19,000 megawatts of generation capacity and supported $3 billion in electricity project financing.
