The Ministry of Oil confirmed on Thursday the production of 220 million standard cubic feet of associated gas per day from the West Qurna Field, while indicating that the expansion of the West Qurna Field will provide 250 megawatts of electricity production by 2027.
Hatem Abdul Imam, Director of the West Qurna 2 Development Authority at the Basra Oil Company, affiliated with the Ministry of Oil, told the Iraqi News Agency (INA): “Current production of associated gas from the Mushrif reservoir is approximately 220 million standard cubic feet per day, of which 180 million cubic feet are supplied to Total as part of its contractual obligations, while the remainder is used to operate internal facilities in the field.”
He explained that “the existing Al-Amin Unit desalinates gas for use in operating three turbines that generate approximately 125 megawatts of electricity,” noting that “expansion plans include adding three new turbines to increase electricity production to 250 megawatts by the end of 2027, with the third phase to add additional power later.”
He added that “technical studies indicate that the field will need more than 350 megawatts of electricity when it reaches a production capacity of 800,000 barrels per day by the end of 2031.”
He pointed out that “work is underway to establish a Unit unit for Al-Amin, and in the future, the number of turbines will increase to nine, which will be operated using approximately 40 to 45 million cubic feet of gas remaining after Total supplies the required quantities.”
