Iraq Reopens Umm Qasr Grain Silo iraq-businessnews

Iraq’s Ministry of Trade has reopened Berth No. 10 at the Umm Qasr grain silo following completion of maintenance and rehabilitation works, restoring the facility to full operational readiness as a key strategic gateway for wheat imports and storage.

The reopening ceremony was attended by the Director General of the State Company for Grain Trading, Dr Haider Nouri Al-Garaawi, who said the move builds on the 2023 achievement of restoring the silo to its full design capacity after years of suspension.

According to a ministry statement, Berth No. 10 serves as Iraq’s primary entry point for wheat shipments. Its rehabilitation was carried out by the engineering department and silo staff, with direct support from Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ Al-Sudani and under the supervision of Trade Minister Atheer Dawood Al-Ghurairi.

The ministry said the reopening will accelerate vessel unloading operations, increase company revenues, and reduce costs, thereby strengthening food security and supporting the national food ration programme.
