Iraq, US enhance cooperation in energy sector Iraqi News

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani confirmed on Tuesday that cooperation with the United States strengthens relations that are based on shared interests.

Al-Sudani’s remarks took place during his meeting with US Deputy Secretary of Energy James Danly and his accompanying delegation, including Chargé d’Affaires of the US Embassy in Iraq Joshua Harris.

The prime minister stated that the Iraqi government has undertaken several initiatives, notably in the energy sector, resulting in major positive change throughout the country, according to a statement released by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).

The Iraqi government has established a specific timetable for achieving its energy sector goals, including self-sufficiency in the production of high-octane gasoline, and work is underway to achieve self-sufficiency in gas production by 2028, according to al-Sudani.

Al-Sudani underlined the significance of cooperation with US energy firms to develop Iraq’s oil reserves and generate electricity.

Danly affirmed that bilateral cooperation is progressing significantly, notably in the development of energy projects. He stated that the US administration’s objective is to deepen partnerships to help Iraq attain self-sufficiency in energy production.

The meeting followed a ceremony held in Baghdad to sign an agreement between the Iraqi Electricity Ministry and Texas-based Excelerate Energy to build a floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) with a capacity of 15 million cubic meters per day in the southern Iraqi port of Khor al-Zubair.

The five-year agreement aims to supply Iraq with sufficient quantities of gas to operate its power plants.
