The Sunnis, Kurds, and Shiite need to have their respective interests met in order to unite and become one GOI, one currency, and one military.
Uniting the three Presidencies and Abadi and getting the new Ministers voted in woukd finally unite the GOI so they can get the needed laws passed. The HCL and RV unites everyone: GOI, CBI, citizens of all regions, and international oil companies.
If the Three Clerics in Iraq and Iran can become one and unite behind Abadi’s reformed technocrat government, the religious, government, and citizens interests would finally be united. Iran and Iraq can join the international world. U.S. military needs to keep Maliki in check until Iran completes their plan with Maliki, which IMO, is “Use him and Loose him.”‘
Islandg1211: The liberation of Mosul And Raqqa from ISIS involves Sunni, Shiite, Kurd, Iranian, and Russian forces, and finally Obama had to allow his military advisors to take charge. Ramadi took about four months to free. Mosul is different, with more civilians, more ISIS fighters.
But, the U.S. military is much more beefed up. The city has been surrounded. US has cleared most of the South of Mosul area, so ISIS wouldn’t be able to reinforce Mosul. Supply lines have been cut. The US targeted ISIS’s leadership, money and communications. Tunnels and boobie traps can be better dealt with by the increasing US support.
The previous estimates of how long it would take to free Mosul was all of 2016. However, that estimate may have been either based on not increasing the US military presence, or simply to not give ISIS any real clue to our plans.
It also depends on how willing and united the three groups can lead the ground attack into Mosul, with support from the U.S. Obama doesn’t want US military casualties. He won’t be able to avoid civilian casualties. These civilians in Mosul need to figure out that they can die being shields for ISIS or they can try to kill ISIS. They outnumber ISIS (I think) about 100:1. More self-liberation would certainly speed up the time table.
