Russian President Vladimir Putin and his US counterpart Donald Trump held a phone call regarding the Ukrainian crisis.
“Presidents Putin and Trump have been holding a phone conversation for an hour,” the Kremlin press service said in a statement. The Kremlin also said that Putin agreed to suspend strikes on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure for 30 days.
For its part, the White House said, “Putin and Trump spoke extensively about the Middle East as a potential area of cooperation.” It added, “Presidents Trump and Putin spoke about the need for peace and a ceasefire in Ukraine.”
White House Assistant to the President and Deputy Chief of Staff Dan Scavino wrote in a post on Twitter: “President Trump is currently in the Oval Office speaking with Russian President Vladimir Putin since 10:00 AM EST. The call is going well and is still ongoing.”
Moscow and Washington expressed optimism about their recent talks, but agreed that the most significant outstanding issues regarding the Ukrainian conflict could only be resolved through high-level contact.
