Meme meets reality

Trump’s Truth Social post on Sep. 6 featured an image of the lunar surface with the caption “THE MOON IS OURS.”
The official Dogecoin account replied on X: “Ahem, there is a queue,” invoking the memecoin’s long-running “to the moon” slogan in a nod to an upcoming lunar mission powered by the digital asset.

While the message appeared aimed at space policy, it quickly intersected with crypto culture, where “DOGE to the moon” has become shorthand for parabolic price gains.

DOGE-1 launch set for Sept. 14

Dogecoin’s retort was more than a joke. The meme coin is tied to a real, funded lunar project, DOGE-1, a CubeSat mission paid entirely in Dogecoin and built by Canadian firm Geometric Energy Corporation.

The DOGE-1 mission is now targeting a Sept. 14 launch from Kennedy Space Center aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.

Originally slated for 2022, the mission has faced multiple delays but remains the most concrete Elon Musk-related catalyst for Dogecoin to date.

Musk, a long-time Dogecoin supporter, has separately hinted at placing a physical Dogecoin on the lunar surface, possibly by 2027. For now, the orbital satellite represents the first step in turning the meme into a literal moonshot.

Market reaction

At the time of writing, DOGE was trading near $0.091, up 27% in a month.

Historical patterns show Dogecoin often rallies ahead of Musk-linked events, though gains have sometimes faded after the catalyst passes.

With a fixed launch date now in sight, traders are watching whether the DOGE-1 mission can deliver more than symbolism, and whether the queue to the moon finally moves forward.
