Baghdad talks bring Iraq, Kuwait closer on oilfield deal

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) — Iraq’s oil minister Hayan Abdul-Ghani announced that Baghdad and Kuwait have made strong headway in negotiations over jointly developing oilfields along their shared border.

The minister held talks in Baghdad with a Kuwaiti delegation representing the joint committee formed under a memorandum of understanding.

Discussions centered on advancing technical cooperation and securing economic gains for both sides.

The two Gulf neighbors share reservoirs such as South Rumaila–Ratqa and Safwan–Abdali.

In 2019, they hired UK-based consultancy ERCE to conduct studies on how best to manage the cross-border deposits.

Officials say the latest round of talks shows the two countries are moving closer to a formal plan to exploit the fields together, a step aimed at boosting investment and easing longstanding disputes over production rights.
