Dollar dips against dong VNEXPRESS

The U.S. dollar weakened against the Vietnamese dong and major peers on Monday morning.

Vietcombank sold the greenback at VND26,367, a 0.004% dip over the holiday weekend. The currency slid 0.15% to around VND26,681 on the black market.

The State Bank of Vietnam lowered its reference rate by 0.004% to VND25,112.

Globally, the dollar was a shade ⁠softer on Monday as investors waited for more developments in the Middle East and, crucially, whether the Strait of Hormuz could be opened.

The U.S. dollar index, which measures the greenback’s strength against a basket of six currencies, was down 0.1% at 98.041.

The Australian dollar was up 0.2% at $0.7214, while its kiwi counterpart advanced ⁠0.5% at $0.5922. The euro was up 0.1% at $1.1730. The British pound was up 0.1% at $1.3595.

The yen climbed as much as 0.75% to 155.69 before paring gains, with markets on alert for action by authorities following suspected intervention by ‌them last week to bolster the battered currency.

Tokyo officials declined to confirm whether they had intervened last week, but sources told Reuters the authorities did undertake yen-buying activity for the first time in two years.
