Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – The spokesperson for the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Major General Sabah Al-Numan, announced on Friday that senior Iraqi and U.S. officials have reaffirmed their joint commitment to establishing a new phase of security cooperation between Baghdad and Washington. He confirmed that bilateral consultations on the future of Iraq–U.S. relations will continue in the coming months.
In a statement received by IraqiNews.com, Al-Numan said that high-level Iraqi and American officials held technical consultations in Baghdad on November 6, in line with the 2008 Strategic Framework Agreement and based on shared national security interests.
“The participants reaffirmed their continued commitment to laying the foundation for a new stage of security cooperation between the United States and Iraq,” Al-Numan said. “This cooperation will help Iraq strengthen its federal security capabilities and achieve tangible benefits for both Iraqis and Americans.”
According to the statement, both sides agreed that consultations will continue in the coming months to further enhance long-term security collaboration and joint counterterrorism efforts. These discussions aim to strengthen the readiness of Iraq’s federal security forces, including the Peshmerga forces, while preserving Iraq’s sovereignty, promoting regional stability, and reinforcing economic and security partnerships between the two nations.
The announcement marks a significant step toward redefining the Iraq–U.S. partnership beyond combat operations, focusing instead on training, intelligence sharing, and institutional support for Iraqi forces. Officials emphasized that the new phase of cooperation aims to empower Iraqi security institutions to independently safeguard the country and prevent the resurgence of terrorist threats.
Both sides highlighted the mutual benefits of a strong, balanced partnership that supports Iraq’s sovereignty and contributes to regional peace and stability. The consultations are expected to build upon the achievements of the Global Coalition against ISIS, while aligning with Iraq’s long-term goals of self-sufficiency and national resilience in the security domain.
