Iraq is developing a national roadmap to align with the European Union’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), focusing on its impact on key industrial sectors.
The discussions took place during a committee meeting chaired by the Ministry of Environment, with participation from multiple government entities.
Riyadh Fakher Al-Hashemi, Director General of the External Economic Relations Department at the Ministry of Trade, said the meeting examined the implications of the mechanism for high-emission products, including oil, aluminium, iron and cement, as well as its effects on trade flows and industrial investment.
The committee is working to prepare a national roadmap aimed at:
- Encouraging investment in high-emission industries under modern environmental standards
- Ensuring new industrial facilities comply with global environmental specifications
- Enhancing the competitiveness of Iraqi products in international markets
The initiative is intended to support Iraq’s integration into global trade systems while addressing environmental requirements linked to carbon emissions.
The EU describes the CBAM as its tool to put a fair price on carbon emitted during the production of carbon-intensive goods that are entering the EU, and to encourage cleaner industrial production in non-EU countries.
