Iraq Launches Regional Index:
Baghdad hosted the International Conference for the Launch of the 2024 Regional Index on Violence Against Women and Girls.
Opening the event, Hana Emmanuel Gorgis, Director General of the Women’s Affairs Directorate, said that the index offers a roadmap for resilience, policy-making, and equipping governments and international partners with comprehensive data. She emphasised that peace and security for women are inseparable from empowering them to play a central role in national development.
Dr. Amir Al-Kinani, Advisor to the President, relayed the President’s greetings and highlighted Iraq’s early adoption of a national strategy to combat violence against women and girls. He noted that the Presidency has submitted two draft laws to Parliament: the Domestic Violence Law and the Supreme Council for Women Law.
Conference participants reviewed regional indicators, shared best practices, and stressed the importance of collective efforts to eliminate violence, describing it as a violation of fundamental human rights and a barrier to stability and prosperity.
