Iraq’s Sub-Critical Nuclear Laboratory:

Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research and Chairman of the Iraqi Atomic Energy Commission (IAEC), Dr. Naim Al-Aboudi, has laid the foundation stone for the Ministry’s Sub-Critical System and Central Laboratories project.

A subcritical nuclear system is a nuclear fission setup where the chain reaction cannot sustain itself.

Speaking at the ceremony, attended by senior officials, university presidents, advisers, representatives of the IEAC, and diplomatic missions, Dr. Al-Aboudi said the initiative will provide a comprehensive scientific environment to advance research and enhance the quality of academic outputs. The laboratories have been designed to meet the latest international standards, offering researchers space for innovation and opportunities to develop advanced scientific skills.

He explained that the Sub-Critical System will serve as a cornerstone for Iraq’s scientific future, enabling students and researchers to participate in advanced experiments that support the peaceful use of nuclear energy in development sectors. He added that the project is central to achieving Sustainable Development Goal 4 (quality education), offering practical training opportunities and strengthening applied research.

The event included speeches, a documentary on the project’s objectives, and concluded with the formal foundation-laying ceremony.
