Iraq TIR Freight Exceeds 1,000 Transits in Nine Weeks iraq-businessnews

Iraq’s General Company for Road Transport, a subsidiary of the Ministry of Transport, has recorded more than 1,000 international freight journeys under the TIR (Transports Internationaux Routiers) system since the beginning of March 2026 through to 10 May, a development the company says reflects growing confidence in Iraq as an international transit corridor.

Murtadha Karim al-Shahmani, Director General of the company, said surpassing the 1,000-journey threshold in a short period reflects improvements to the administrative and technical infrastructure developed by the Ministry of Transport and the General Company for Road Transport. He added that confidence among international companies and operators in Iraq’s border crossings and transit routes had grown considerably.

Al-Shahmani noted that the company acts as the national guarantor for the TIR system, coordinating the movement of transit trucks and overseeing procedures in cooperation with relevant authorities to ensure the smooth flow of transit operations and compliance with international standards for transport and customs clearance.

He said the activation of the international TIR road transport system represents one of the most significant government steps towards establishing Iraq as a regional hub for transport and transit, and that the company would continue to support government and ministerial plans to consolidate Iraq’s position as a safe and effective transit corridor linking regional and international markets, contributing to the growth of trade and the diversification of non-oil revenues.
