PM orders stronger measures to ensure power supply to support double-digit growth vietnamnews

HÀ NỘI — Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng ordered stronger measures to be taken to ensure sufficient electricity supplies to support double-digit economic growth and the development of high-tech projects, particularly data centres.

Speaking at a meeting with ministries, agencies and energy-sector groups on power supply through 2030 and plans to revise the eighth power development plan on Monday, PM Hưng said electricity security is considered an urgent priority and a prerequisite for achieving the country’s socio-economic development targets in 2026.

The meeting focused on the progress of major power generation and transmission projects, obstacles to implementation, and immediate measures to ensure adequate electricity supplies during the remaining months of 2026, in 2027 and through 2030 as well as measures to raise funding for energy projects.

Stressing that ensuring energy security and a reliable power supply is critical as Việt Nam pursues double-digit growth, PM Hưng called for stronger determination and efforts to make necessary adjustments to the revised PDP8 to meet the rising demand.

He said that 2026 was a foundational year for the country’s development goals, with 2027 expected to mark a period of accelerated growth and a breakthrough in implementing the targets set for the current five-year term.

The PM called for more decisive action, adding that the most important task is to set clear timelines and assign specific responsibilities to each entity involved.

He instructed the Ministry of Industry and Trade to work with the Ministry of Finance and relevant agencies to review the implementation status of individual projects to identify projects that are falling behind schedule or are no longer feasible, as well as those requiring adjustments, new projects to be added and replacement projects.

Based on the review, the ministry must compile a list of projects with specific implementation timelines and clearly assign responsibilities to ministries, agencies, state-owned groups and enterprises, and local authorities.

The review must also clarify the selection of investors and the funding sources for each project.

The Government and the PM recently submitted for issuance special mechanisms and policies, while speeding up decentralisation and delegation of authority to localities to help deliver the revised PDP8.

To improve the institutional framework, the Government submitted the Law on Electricity to the National Assembly, along with Resolution 253/2025/QH15 on mechanisms and policies for national energy development in 2026-2030, as well as mechanisms to clear obstacles to renewable energy projects. — VNS
